The product is beautiful. For the beach you can use without the shield as it is large and offers protection. At first I thought the shield was very dark then I discovered there was a protective plastic on both sides. It's hard to see, if no visible line shows up indicating the plastic layer, you have to lift the seams and scratch the edge up and pull it out (important: on both sides). After doing this I can see much better, even though it's dark kind of sun blocker layer.
